THE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT & THE ROADSIDE FLOWER
VENDOR

admin

The professional Landscape Architect vs the Roadside Flower Vendor. Sometimes this can be a
bit of a pickle when it comes to settling on who you need to do what for you. Fortunately, we at
Urban Green Landscapes offer both areas of service with the help of the ever-dedicated team.
However, who should you consult for your landscape and garden design? Well, here’s what
they both bring to the table.
Service Vs Product
Sometimes I look at the Roadside Flower Vendor and have to admit that I do admire their
marketing platform. Just that as a Landscape Architect I may not be in a position to place my
designs on the road side for everyone to see and procure the service. And that’s part of where
the difference is between the Roadside Flower Vendor, and the professional Landscape
Architect. From one, you procure a product, from the other you procure the service that enables
you to make the best desired use of the product and achieve the best desired outcome. While
the flower vendor may have an idea where to place what plants in your landscape, the allocation
and organization of those spaces in your landscape falls in the domain of the Landscape
Architect. As designers, we not only offer design services, but also planning services for your
space.
Collaboration Vs Isolation
Landscape Architecture is a collaborative profession. Landscape Architects work closely with
other professionals in the bult industry to ensure the most sustainable and functional use of
space for the Clients they serve. For example, determining positioning of certain landscape
features in relation to the rooms of the house for which the garden is being designed, like
positioning a water feature close to a room that gets really hot which will play a role in making
the space in the room cooler when the temperatures are high. Call it natural air conditioning. As
Landscape Architects, we work very closely with all flower vendors, and a wide array of other
professionals, and what you should know, off the bat, is that when a Landscape Architect is
engaged in a project, no matter how big or small, rest assured the space will be put to the best
possible use. This is part of what you pay for when consulting one. Technical knowledge of soil
properties and plant preferences is a space where the Landscape Architect and the Roadside
Gardener are in close collaboration as well. It is absolutely key to have the right plants in the
right type of soil and environmental surroundings.
Professional Scope of Works & Project Magnitudes
While it may be easy to assume that a Landscape Architect simply does the same kind of work
that a gardener does, this is far from accurate. Landscape Architects have a vast range of very
technical training that makes them suitable for highly complex projects. Some of the areas of
design that a gardener may not make to handle but are well with in the Landscape Architect’s
forte are:
i. Designing steep slopes
ii. Designing retaining walls
iii. Designing and detailing outdoor structures

iv. Providing solutions for challenges with elevation
v. Providing for and designing of service lines, access ways, parking, etc.

Landscape Architects undergo rigorous training over their undergraduate to post-graduate
studies to enable them to handle such complex issues. In effect, while a Gardener may be only
well equipped to deal with planting in smaller spaces, gardens and yards, the Landscape
Architect is trained to handle projects of all magnitudes, from the everyday residential garden, to
complex Mega City planning and design projects in collaboration with the various professionals
involved.
